This blog builds on that information, with detail about the structure of the Year 2 approach, instructional routines and resources. A Note on Handwriting - handwriting reviews are integrated into the spelling instruction. Handwriting practice is done in the context of writing activities/routines. Error correction must be provided by the teacher during all writing routines.
A Note on Small Group Work - Small Group Reading continues in Year 2, allowing teachers to instruct and guide groups of similar students at the zone of their proximal development. In addition to the F-1 SGR routine, writing is also suggested e.g. Let’s spell for students needing more scaffolding.

Core instructional routines such as Speed Sounds, Speed Words, Super Spelling, Let’s Spell, Lets Write, Whole Class Choral Reading, Partner Reading, Small Group Reading and Writing and Daily Review will be used along with some new routines supporting explicit morphology instruction.
A Note on Decodable Books at Year 2
In Year 2 our whole class instructional focus shifts more to spelling and reading fluency. Throughout year 2 our aim is for students to transition off of decodable books. A portion of the year 2 cohort will be ready for this at the start of the year, others may need to continue to practice with the LLLL Stage 7 decodable books. Our new Daily Fluency Books will provide students with a variety of engaging short texts to apply and build fluency, as well comprehension/vocabulary knowledge and skills.
