Reading assessment & mid-year expectations

Written by Little Learners Team | 3/06/22 1:34 AM

We often get asked at this time of year for support with reading assessment and reporting. As schools following the Little Learners Love Literacy® program teach both reading and spelling from the very beginning of school, we would recommend using the LLARS and LLASS mid-year and at the end of the year to record children's progress and to diagnose any gaps - informing tier 1 classroom instruction and additional tier 2 interventions.

Schedule Foundation Year 1
Term 1 -
Term 2 LLARS & LLASS 1 LLARS & LLASS 4 & 5
Term 3 -
Term 4 LLARS & LLASS 2 & 3 LLARS & LLASS 6 & 7

We recommend leaving the LLARS assessment as late as possible in term 2 in Foundation. The results will depend on how much of the sequence you have taught prior to the assessment.

Below are our suggested benchmarks and some additional guidance to help get you through this report writing season! Don't forget, we run free webinars on all our assessments - please sign up and join us online this term to learn more about the LLARS and the LLASS - and to ask all of your questions.

  • Little Learners Assessment of Reading Skills (LLARS) - phoneme-grapheme recognition; single word /non-word decoding;  heart words; unseen decodable texts. New data spreadsheet is now available through the button below
  • Little Learners Assessment of Spelling Skills (LLASS) - Phoneme-grapheme knowledge; segmenting to encode single words, spelling compound and multi-syllable words, morphology knowledge

Little Learners benchmarks

Little Learners Love Literacy® has its own teaching scope and sequence and end-of-year benchmarks. All Little Learners teaching resources and assessments are based on this teaching sequence. The Little Learners benchmarks for reading and spelling in Foundation and Year 1, as shown below, are achievable.

Both assessments begin mid-year Foundation and align the student’s knowledge/skills with Little Learners Love Literacy® stages.

We have created some mid-year expectations to guide your reporting to parents - using your LLARS and the LLASS assessment data plus teacher judgement:
