Make best practice common practice with Little Learners Love Literacy®

Victoria is doing great things in the area of reading! In June this year, the Victorian Government announced they were Making Best Practice Common Practice In The Education State through evidence-informed practices. This approach to reading is the most effective and efficient way to teach all students to read.

What is evidence-informed practice?

Evidence-informed practice is practice informed by evidence, which includes scientific research as well as experience and expertise. There are many models and bodies of research in the field of literacy, which informs the Little Learners Love Literacy® approach. The Science of Reading is a body of research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. Within it, some key models you may already be familiar with include:

  • The Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tunmer, 1986)
  • Scarborough’s Reading Rope (Scarborough, 2001)
  • The Big 6 of Reading (Konza, 2009)

Not familiar with these models?

Evidence-based literacy research stresses the importance of explicit and sequential literacy teaching from the beginning.

What will this look like in Victorian classrooms?

  • All students from Prep to Grade 2 will be taught using a systematic synthetic phonics approach.

  • Minimum of 25 minutes daily explicit teaching of phonics and phonemic awareness.

  • Explicit teaching of oral language, vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension.

What is explicit teaching?

Explicit teaching breaks down skills and knowledge into smaller parts. Students are taught these small parts directly in a systematic, logical sequence – progressing from simple to complex. Teaching is mostly whole class following an “I do, we do, you do” structure:

I do - teacher instructs and provides a model.

We do - guided practice supported by the teacher.

You do - the learner practices/applies new content independently – moving towards mastery.

The Little Learners Love Literacy® teaching model

At Little Learners Love Literacy® we know that children learn faster if they are taught systematically and explicitly using synthetic phonics and a structured literacy approach - it really does work!

Our well-tested systematic teaching sequence is taught through our explicit teaching model every day:

  • Revise using Speed Sounds and Chants and speed words.
  • Identify from the Little Learners Love Literacy® sequence and Teacher Activity Resources what to teach next.
  • Plan how the children will practise this skill to reach mastery using the Little Learners Love Literacy® resources and games.
  • Apply this knowledge to reading decodable texts.
  • Assess children to monitor their progress.

Our resources have been designed to support effective explicit teaching of reading, handwriting and spelling in an engaging way … you won’t find Milo’s Birthday Surprise in a teacher toolkit of any other SSP program out there! And our vibrant decodable books are made in Victoria and are already much loved in many schools. Children's success and enjoyment are at the heart of everything we make.

What do you need to implement a successful reading, spelling and writing approach in your school?

  • A systematic phonics scope and sequence
  • Lesson plans to teach reading, handwriting and spelling together.
  • Explicit teaching routines embedded consistently across classrooms
  • Targeted and engaging reading and writing practice.
  • Decodable books for students to apply learning and work towards fluency and mastery.
  • Assessment suite to support your scope and sequence.
  • A response to intervention approach embedded from Prep.
  • Professional learning for all staff to feel confident and supported.
